Why do Lovecraftian beings come to earth?

Why do Lovecraftian beings come to earth?

I am answering random questions today about world building, over on Reddit and decided to take my answers from there and expand upon them even further over here. So that's what this page is. Me rambling on about various aspects of world building techniques I use when writing the Quaraun series. The questions I am answering are embedded here. Clicking the link in the embedded question will take you to the original Reddit page where you can see the original answer along with other people's answers. If you wish to comment, you can do so on the Reddit page where a place to do so is provided.

Why do Lovecraftian beings come to earth?

What could be a reason why lovecraftian beings come to earth? from scifiwriting

One of the stranger aspects of the Quaraun novel series, is a race of Lovcraftian squid-headed humanoid aliens invade Earth and show up in almost every novel in the series.

Primary minor character ZooLock the Great is a Thullid Priest.

Quaraun and GhoulSpawn, are both Thullid Spawnlings, Elves who have had Thullid larvae implanted into their brains.

At first I had no reason for them to be there, other then I just wanted them there. The Quaraun series is set on an alternate version of Earth and it's more or less just Earth with minor changes. Real Earth does not have Squid headed beasts walking around. There Thullids had no backstory to explain why they were on Earth. And at first they didn't need one. But the 3rd novel had this whole flashback scene into the main character Quaraun's childhood, which revealed he and his mother had been attacked by them and the attack was the reason for several phobias he now has as an adult.

Well, I got to writing that scene, and I started asking myself...

"Why in the heck did these creatures attack his family? Wait... why are they even on Earth at all? What the hell are they and where did they come from?"

Next thing I knew, I'm doing this whole world building session for the squid beasts trying to figure out what sort of world they might have originated from and what reason they ended up on Earth.

My conclusion was this...

The squids are aberrations... their real bodies actually are squids, but here on Earth they are human-like bodies with squid heads, because the squids, attached themselves to human hosts, sucked out the brain, eat the head, and attached their body to the human body to try to "blend in" with humans, resulting in squid-headed humans.

Back on their home planet, they were just plain old ocean dwelling squids though, though why did they choose to become human-squid beasts? Could it have something to do with why they are on earth?

After some thought, I realize, they are not invaders of Earth. They are not trying to hunt down and kill humans. They are survivors. They came from a water planet, like Earth, but their solar system was destroyed by a sun going super nova or something to that affect (I didn't do a lot in the scientific details... basically their sun blew up for whatever reason and took their planet with it.)

Basically there was a Noah-type person, who gathered up animals and people and plants and set out on his space ark to find a new planet so his people and the creatures they knew would survive. Who knows what happened next (I didn't figure out the details yet, probably will at some point though) but somehow most everything on the ark ship died and the only life that survived, was the sea creatures living in their sealed water filled tanks.

After who knows how long, the ship crashes in the Atlantic ocean on Earth and the sea creatures get into Earth's oceans.... many of Earth's sea creatures (squid, octopus, jellyfish, angler fish, moray eels, sea slugs, etc) turn out to be NOT from Earth originally, but all originated from this crashed ship, thus why many sea creatures are so freaky looking (especially the deep sea fish that look so alien)....This now explains why these very alien looking creatures are so high intelligence too.

At some point they discover they can live on land if they combine themselves on a host body, which they do. Turns out they are not in fact Demons and they really are not trying to take over Humanity - this is just the way Humans translate them.

But I had them obsessed with this Elder God from the Underworld... how do I explain that, if the above is their back story?

Well, while I'm trying to come up with an answer to that, I'm on YouTube looking at squid and jellyfish videos, and I come across this video about tiny one inch long jellyfish off the coast of Japan that are among the deadliest creatures on the planets. Then I find this other video about "the immortal jellyfish" a jellyfish (also in Japan) that is over 1,000 years old and regenerates itself every time it dies (yes, it's a real creature - Google it - most of the cloning science was actually based of research into this jellyfish) . I'm fascinated by my discovery of these two real world jelly fish that I had never heard of before.

And then an idea hits me...

People always assume Cthulhu to be this super huge god right? That's because the cultists and such describe him that way.... but what if....

What if the Elder God was in fact a tiny one inch jellyfish, that had super psychic powers and was convincing every one it was huge, when in fact it wasn't? What if it was one of these immortal jellyfish from Japan, and it had just lived so danged long, that it was bored, and was having fun by sending psychic thoughts into people, convincing them it was a giant god beast just to watch people get scared....

So what if Cthulhu turned out to be like the Wizard of Oz and wasn't actually the big bad guy every one thought him to be, turned out to be this little old man behind the curtain, or in this case, the tiny super smart, super old, super bored jellyfish getting it's thrills by terrifying everyone?

So, that's what I went with...

The Sea Creatures of Earth are aliens who escaped a dying planet, some evolved into Lovcraftian beasts by absorbing Human bodies, while their leader uses mental illusions to convince cultists it's some ancient god, when in fact it's just a bored little jellyfish with mega powerful psychic skills.

In the end, this all worked and fit very logically in the story I was writing, so it just worked.

.

Not sure if that helps you out with your story or not, may or may not work for your story, may not be the type of direction you'd want to go, but that's the reason I went with as it seemed most logical for the setting I was writing. Hopefully this helps give you some ideas for what you could do in yours. Good luck with it!

>humans taste good

Always my favourite reason for an alien invasion. I've used this as an excuse in so many stories now! LOL!

What Is This Site?

I'm an author. This is an author home page. It's about me, my life, my books, my hobbies, my home town, and anything else that applies to me and my life.

Since starting my writing career in 1978, I have written 130+ novels, 2,000+ short stories, 6,000+ non-fiction articles (ALL are found on this site), a few dozen stage plays, 12,000+ blog posts, and a few comic book scripts for Disney's Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck (I only worked for Disney one year (in 2005) and only wrote a few stories for their Danish comic books).

NOTE: I ONLY write the Quaraun series (aka The Twighlight Manor series aka The Adventures of Quaraun the Insane). In recent years there has been an issue with impersonators trying to pass books off as written by me, notably several non-fiction and Erotica books. I write neither nonfiction nor Erotica.

ALL of my books and their cover arts are listed on my website here. Beware of any books you find claiming to be me. If the books are NOT listed here on my website, they are NOT my books.

In fiction works, I specialize in Weird/Bizarro Tales set in 40th century CyberPunk-Quasi Medieval, Cozy Dark Fantasy and Science Fiction worlds featuring an intersex Elf and his Faerie husband main characters.  I DO NOT WRITE ANY OTHER SERIES - THIS SERIES IS THE ONLY ONE I WRITE.

Non-fiction (found ONLY here on my site) is daily updates of events in my life, and how-tos on how I write my novels.

I DO NOT write Erotica.

I DO NOT write books with HUMAN characters.

The Erotica books and books with Human characters, that you are finding, are written by scammers trying to impersonate me.

There is an ongoing FBI investigation into this matter. If you find any such books, please report them to FBI Agengt Andy Drewer @207–774–9322

The FBI believes the people behind the impersonation accounts showing up, are relatives of the woman who murdered my son.
