Can I write a novel without putting chapters in it?

Over on The Writer’s Nook I found this question asked:

Can I write a novel without putting chapters in it?

To which the highest voted as the most correct answer stats:

"You can, but I wouldn't recommend it. Readers need organizational structures that are engaging. ... No reader would be venture past the first page or two because it would make no sense."

It is illogical that this is the highest voted "correct" answer, LOL! Just goes to show what social media users will vote for! I wonder how many of those voters are book readers?

My 2nd highest selling novel (The Night of The Screaming Unicorn), is 157k words long (over 500 pages in paperback) published in 2014, has sold over a million copies, and is written as one long monologue stream of consciousness thought from the main character as he sits in a single room of a single scene. In other words, there are not only no chapters, there are no scene changes either.

I have 138 novels published (150k to 175k words each) and MOST do not have chapters at all, while the ones that do have 10 or fewer chapters, meaning each chapter is well over 20k words long.

I have 423 novellas published. Between 20k words to 75k words each. NONE has chapters. Not one.

The entire series in total, has sold over ten MILLION copies (All titles combined).

That's over 500 books each 20k to 175k words, with no chapters and perfectly able to sell TEN MILLION copies without chapters causing readers to not come back for more.

I am baffled as to why so many responses are telling this person that no one would read a novel without chapters.

Clearly this is untrue as I could not have sold a million copies of a very long chapterless novel is no one enjoyed reading it and was recommending their friends read it, now could I?

And as other commenter pointed out there are plenty of popular novels without chapters.

People who enjoy reading, enjoy good stories, about well crafted characters, and when it comes right down to it, most readers don’t give a rat’s ass about things like spelling, grammar, or formating (chapter breaks are formatting not grammar, I don’t know why one answer here calls it a part of grammar).

Create characters readers love, write a good story about those characters. That’s all readers really want.

Readers want to have a good time, enjoying a good story, with fun characters. Chapters are unnecessary curtains to decorate the windows of the story, only this and nothing more.

There are novels with chapters and novels without chapters.

Do what is best for the story in question. Neither way is more right or more wrong then the other. Both have their uses.

Can I write a novel without putting chapters in it?

While there are around 20k pages on this website, most of them are blocked from search engines, with only around 800 of them available for appearing in Google/Bing/etc search results. The remainder can only be accessed via the various links found throughout this site. This was done deliberately on my part, and I did it because the bulk of the pages on this website are chapters from 138 novels and 423 novellas, so only the first page of each novel and novella indexed by search engines, and the remainder are linked in order, one page at a time, via clicking "next page" at the end of each. So if you are looking for a specific page from a specific novel, Google can't help you.
