FAQ: What are the most visited pages on this website and how many visits do they get?

Several years ago, I wrote an article on how to write different types of magic uses, or rather how I personally write various types of magic users within the context of my Quaraun books. Today that page is one of my top ten most visited articles. It gets 50 to 500 views/reads/hits/visits per day depending on the time of the years and has had over 200k visits total since it was published.

Amphibious Aliens: Debunking The Atwater Family's Alien Abduction Hoax with more then 30MILLION reads since 2007 and The GoldenEagle: Debunking Stephen King's World's Most Haunted Car Hoax with over tenMILLION reads since 2007 still rank as the two most visited articles on my website, but, neither of those are writing related.

Writing Medieval Servants is my most visited writing related article with over 7MILLION reads.

This website was started in 1996 and has 1 to 3 new articles (all written by me, I am the only writer on this site) published almost daily. In 2017 we crossed ten thousand articles published. COPPA Compliance

You said boy and man... that means you are writing Shota (a love relationship between a man over 18 and a boy under 18 - even if the characters are just 17 and 19). Please know that there are only a handful of genres that are banned from publication in America (as in actually banned by the US government via the law title: 18 U.S.C. § 2257 ) and Shota is one of them.

If you attempt to self-publish Shota on Kindle, Amazon WILL ban you from buying and selling on Amazon, they will delete your account and put a block on the ispn of your computer (meaning if your parents or siblings have computers in your same house, their accounts will be banned by Amazon as well, as the ispn is the same for the entire household).

If you publish Shota on your blog or website, US law requires you put up something known as:

COPPA Compliance & Disclaimers

It'll usually be a notice in your site footer that reads something like this:

"This site meets the requirements of COPPA/CDA/CIPA/Obscenity/18 U.S.C. § 2257 Compliance and is not selling adult-fetish services and/or products to minors and all models seen in sexualized images are over the age of 18"

If you want to publish Shota, you will need to first find a publisher in Japan (the only country with any publishing houses that accept Shota manuscripts) and plan on your books NEVER seeing the light of day in America outside of the child porn blackmarket underground.

Please note too, that the FBI WILL be knocking on your door, they WILL put a trace on your computer, phone, and emails, and you WILL be taken in to your local FBI office for questioning. Plan on getting to know your local FBI agents on a first name basis, you'll be seeing a lot of them for the next 20 or 30 years of you life once the book is published.

Also plan on getting to know the Ku Klux Klan and the Westboro Baptist Church up close and personal. (they blew up my house with a bomb, filled my motorhome with sewage, took my cats cut their heads off and nailed them to my door, then left a big white cross in my yard in the hole where my house was before the bomb blew it up... welcome to the real world of being a published Yaoi author in America.)

Start memorizing the Bill of Rights, know what your local state laws are regarding the limits of freedom of speech. (Such as if you live in Florida, you can still go to prison for writing a gay couple as that law which was passed in the 1950s is still on the books and has not yet been overturned). And get a damned good lawyer... you'll need him.

And become VERY familiar with COPPA/ 18 U.S.C. § 2257

There's a reason there are so few professionally published Yaoi authors in America...freedom of speech, freedom of press, is not nearly as free as you think it is.

If you pay attention to what's published, sex with any one under 18 in books is always "MENTIONED" but not "SEEN". You'll see a kid chased, stalked, attacked, beted, dragged off, hear their screams... but the scene always fades to black before the sex starts.

In the case of my own series, there is a scene where the boy is attacked and stripped naked, and a line stating that

"the penetration hurt causing him to struggle even more against his attacker"....

that one line, is the only line.

The boy grows up terrified of sex, terrified of being touched, and over all suffering from severe PTSD.

Later in the same novel, the 2 characters meet again, but now the 15 year old boy is 30 years old adult. A fact that is very clearly stated. Because he is scared of sex, he is beaten up, teased, and bullied by his peers, who in one scene strip him naked and torture him grizzly and nearly murder him. He is rescued from them, by the same man whom had raped him as a child. This man takes him in and cares for him (note this is a Medieval setting and there are no doctors or hospitals). It is nearly a year before he is recovered from his injuries and able to get up and walk around again. At which point he doesn't leave, but rather stays with the man who had formerly raped him, and at that point they become lovers, and then there is the graphically details sex scenes that are out right porn scenes.

The novel in question by the way, which these scenes come from, is BoomFuzzy, Volume 3 of The Quaraun Series:

The issue brought up by the self-righteous do-goodies who complained, as pointed out to me by police officers, FBI agents, lawyers, and court judges, is the fact that READERS FALSELY ASSUMED that the boy was STILL a 15 year old boy, later in the book when the full on porn scenes happen, and for some reason, had completely overlooked the fact that 15 years had gone by since the rape scene, and he was now himself a 30 year old adult.

In the end, each court case got thrown out of court on grounds of the complainers filing false complaints, because no evidence of child porn could be found.

However, the fact remains, if you do write a scene including sex with a minor and someone decides to complain, they CAN take you to court, the police CAN arrest you for publishing in, and the FBI WILL be there to tear your life apart, because COPPA/ 18 U.S.C. § 2257 is a Federal Law, and IF the judge finds you guilty of promoting child porn, the fine is $250,000 and 25 years in prison.

In my case it was a local church group, whose complaint was that they wanted me removed from their town (a town I had lived in for 50+ years and they had only just moved into) on grounds that I was in their words "dangerous to their children, just look at what she writes". Note too that in the latest case (the 2015 one: State of Maine, Biddeford District Court: Docket #BDDC-PA-2015-00574) they appealed it after the judge threw it out, and it went to Superior Court where the case lasted for 9 months before being thrown out of court again.

Actually, YES, they WELL, be knocking down you door.

The SWAT team that stormed into my home on April 10, 2015 did $10k in damages to my motorhome when they literally tore the door off and then smashed all my furniture.

Something that they did without a warrant, I might add.

I ran into issues because of a 15 year old character, having a relationship with an adult villan of unspecified age, but who was portrayed as a child predator. The novel is me 2nd best selling novel, but 80% of my sales are to Japan. Germany being 2nd in sales, Brazil being 3rd in sales. The rest of the planet making up fewer then 2% of sales.

Even though America is only a small fraction of that 2%, 97% of all copies sold in America have been returned and to date I've received more them 200 angry emails from American readers including more then a dozen death threats.

The story is not Romance, it's Horror, and the boy is the main character. It ends with the predator adult commit suicide, and the boy then turning on his family and killing his family, blaming them for driving his "lover" to suicide.

The boy was portrayed as having Stockholm Syndrome (psychosis caused by a rape victim who developed sympathy for the rapist and defends the rapists instead of the people trying to help him.)

The reason the novel got attacked by hate was because so many young readers were calling is "gay Romance" even though it was not Romance at all. The entire story is very violent, and was written to show the horrors of living through child abuse and the damage that it can cause to a young person's mind when they are traumatized by someone they trust.

I was flabbergasted when readers started hailing it "the greatest dub-con BDSM gay romance ever" (according to one reviewer)... I never intended it to be seen as a romance novel and sadly the very reason it became so popular and got so many sales was because teens were reading it as though it was a gay romance! It was the American readers who were calling it Romance and the parents of teen readers who were getting upset over it.

I am Scottish, not American, so I find it difficult to grasp the American habit of romanticizing rape into a fetish, but that is what readers were doing.

In any case, this is why I warn you to use caution when writing a relationship (good or bad) between a character. under 18 and one over 18.

I'd highly recommend you put the "boy's" age as exactly 18 or even 19 to be on the safe side.

Other than the age of the younger character, you shouldn't have trouble with writing/publishing gay literature.

As for your worries of people hating on gay books and seeking readers, MOST publishing houses accept gay manuscripts now, and most readers are no longer shocked to encounter gay couples in books.

When it comes to people being upset over LGBTQ+ books, I've found that it's NOT the LGBTQ+ community that will be your biggest critics, but rather fundamental extremist Christian-hate groups (I'm not talking about your average Christian person, but rather I'm referring to radical groups like Westboro Baptist Church and the Ku Klux Klan). It seems that WestBoro Baptist Church actually has a team of members who do nothing but look for new releases of LGBTQ+ books specifically so they can target the authors by sending hate mail to them. They are EXTREMELY anti-gay and can be VERY violent, and are considered to be a domestic terrorist group, so if you do get contacted by them, don't ignore it, call the FBI immediately. The FBI has a team of agents who are assigned JUST to protecting authors of gay literature from groups like those. Sadly, we live in a world where authors of gay literature need that kind of protection. :(

Thankfully since the leader of Westboro died last year, they have become less active, so perhaps their attacks on gay authors will become less and soon stop entirely. There's always that hope. :) It seems to that they only target authors of the New England region, seeing how they are themselves based in New England, so if you live outside of New England you shouldn't ever hear from them - hopefully.

That said, the attacks by gay haters on authors of gay literature are not as common as they were in the 1970s to 1990s. It happens far less frequently these days. Which is a good thing. It means there is more understanding out there.

How well would a book about gay wizards do in sales?

My primary series (the Yaoi one) is about a polyamouros bi-sexual, transvestite wizard. He has 2 male lovers and 4 wives. The series spaces 130 volumes, only 5 of which are available in print though. Each volume sells around 7,000 copies over the course of about 4 years time.

Sales are not huge, but at the same time, my sales are far above and beyond what is considered "average" for a self-published series.

I don't think a book would suffer from a gay pairing, but there are fewer readers actively seeking out books with a gay pairing, so you can expect fewer sales for that reason. But most readers are not going to NOT read a book, just because it features a gay pairing.

So, yes, go ahead and write your book with a gay couple... but just be careful of the age of the younger character. Make him 18.

If it's a school setting, change it to a University, make him a first year college student (18+) instead of a high school student.
