So, I had a thought today: people keep talking about AI is going to put writers out of a job. I'm not seeing that. Perhaps it is because I have an endless passion for writing, do not write for money, and can write daily, hourly, endlessly for decades without earning a penny and that lack of income has no bearing on my desire to write. I suppose, if I was someone who lacked a passion for writing and was only writing to make money, I might have a different view on AI being a threat. But, for me, I just can't see how AI is a threat because I can't see how AI is going to have any real, lasting impact on my passionate desire to write.

Instead of doomsday fear mongering over the end of writing careers, let's instead look for ways that we can become a better writer with ChatGPT. I feel that there is far too much fear talk and dooms daying from far too many writers, about ChatGPT.

Yes, scummy people will use LLM AIs like ChatGPT for nefarious scumbag things. But scummy black haters use EVERY writing tool for their scumbaggery. That is just what scummy people do.

Yes, Amazon KDP and places like ClarkesWorld are being flooding with AI gibberish, drivel.

Yes, big corporations are mass firing human content writers in favor of saving money by hiring just a handful of AI prompt writers instead.

Yes, ChatGPT and similar AI programs HAVE changed the writing and publishing industry in big ways and did it in a matter of days.

But you know what? None of this means we have to run through the street panicking looking for places to bury our heads in the sand, while screaming the end is here.

I was a writer in the 1970s when the gas crisis hit and had massive impacts on everything, including the publishing industry. Almost overnight pulp magazines ceased to exist and writers screamed doomsday because there was no place to sell short stories. What happened? Novels became popular for the first time ever, and all us pulp short story writers switched to writing novels. We evolved, we changed, we saw that writing and publishing would never be the same and we embraced those changes and kept on going.

In 1994 the paper crisis hit, causing more then 20,000 newspapers, magazines, and small chapbook publishers to go out of business. For many writers it looked like the end had arrived. Doomsdayers screamed and yelled, and the rest of us embraced the change and looked for way to keep on going, thus ushering in the rise of paperless books, digital books, ebooks.

The mid-2000s economy started crashing, more publishers went under, and traditional publishing was no longer a viable income, so we writers took to self publishing instead. We continued to evolve and chang and we kept on writing.

2020 hit with Covid, stay at home orders put millions in positions of desperately needing work, with no jobs to be found. Millions turned to writing. Amazon KDP started in 2007 and in February 2019 proudly announced having crossed 4million books published in that 12 year period. February 2021, just two years later, KDP announced they had crossed THIRTY million books published - over five times more in a single year then in the entire of the previous decade, all because of the Covid shutdowns. The result is now we writers have t deal with over saturation on levels no one ever could have imagined would happen, making writing as a career VERY difficult since 2020.

But, we continued on, still writing, still pressing forward, and now AI has arrived, and, the saturations had reached the point of more then 4k books being published DAILY on KDP.

All of this has led to millions of terrified naysayers, writer's strikes, authors sueing AI code devs, and terrified writers huddled in corners too scared to write, because the biggest fear ever has finally hit us: AI is real, it's here, and it's taking over the writing industry... or is it?

For five decades now, I have seen big crisis hit the publishing industry, doomsayer claiming it was the end of writing, and every time, we writers pushed on, moved forward, changed how we did things, and kept on writing. AI is no different.

Yes, AI has caused rapid changes in the writing industry.

Yes, those of us who want to keep going, are going to need to change how we do things in order to keep afloat.

But I don't think AI is as big of a crisis as many are making it out to be. I think, if we all calm down, breath, relax, and take the time to really do some deep thinking, we writers will see that AI could very well become our best friend, in terms of boosting our writing careers, increasing our writing skills.

Well, that got me thinking further on, if AI is not a threat to me as a writer, well, is it possible instead, maybe AI will be helpful to me as a writer? If so, how could AI be helpful to me?

My first thought is, ChatGPT is pretty good at coming up with lists of writing prompts, so AI is therefore able to inspire me to write even more than I already do.

Next I thought, ChatGPT is pretty good at giving me basic plots and summaries, and turning those plots and summaries into usable online, which speeds up my planning and organizing process, again, helps me to write even more, by freeing up more time for me to spend on writing.

Also, ChatGPT has proven useful in editing. It's not great. I still prefer ProWritingAid for big edits, but, for small edits, ChatGPT works pretty well.

ChatGPT is also good for giving me plot options to help with road blocks in the story. By this I mean, if I'm writing a story and come to a point where the plot could go one of two or three or more directions, I type up a summary of what is going on and where the story stands, ending by asking ChatGPT to give me a list of five possible outcomes. I then take each outcome option and write it out, so that I can see which way is best for the story. This again, speeds up time, giving me more time to write, because it eliminates completely the writer's block of getting stuck not knowing which way to take the story next.

And thus, I have concluded that instead of doomsday fear mongering over AI, like a lot of writers are doing right now, I have instead looked at the positive and found ways in which AI will help me as a writer.

Okay, so we are seeing a bit of repetition and overlap happening. In some cases exact word for word copy from one answer to the next.

I noticed to in most answers it defaulted to giving us a list instead of writing a blog post as I had asked it to do. 

I'm thinking, I might take each of the suggestions ChatGPT gave me here, and ask it to write an article for each one. If I do that, I'll link to them from here so you can find them. Today is July 24, 2023, and as of right now, there are no links yet. It could be days, weeks, months, or even years before I get around to doing that, so if there are links here, yay you for being here to find them, and if there are no links or only a few links, well, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

But, now we can see what ChatGPT can do with basic, minimal prompts. I think in future articles I'll try giving ChatGPT more complex prompts so we can see the differences, but for now, I think we are done here. We accomplished what we set out to do (brainstorm ideas on how ChatGPT can be used as a tool to help us writers improve our skills.)

If you choose to use LLM AI's such as ChatGPT for your content, please remember that t is NOT a research program, it is NOT a search engine, and 88 times out of 10 it is going to give you as much as 75% inaccurate information. DO NOT use LLM AIs to create your content, unless you plan on doing huge amounts of fact checking and actual research to ensure that the content you publish is accurate.
