Several years ago, I wrote an article on how to write different types of magic uses, or rather how I personally write various types of magic users within the context of my Quaraun books. Today that page is one of my top ten most visited articles. It gets 50 to 500 views/reads/hits/visits per day depending on the time of the years and has had over 200k visits total since it was published.

Oh! This is a great idea for a thread! I love seeing what everybody uses and how, etc. I started vlogging March 2016, so about a year and a half for me. At first I was doing it, just to pass the time while walking my dog every morning, but after a few weeks, I realize I really like doing this quite a lot, so upgraded my equipment. Then I started talking about doing it as a career, and next thing I know my boyfriend bought me better equipment for my birthday. So I've had a few equipment changes over time. I'll list all of them, so you can see the progression of what I've used. This is gonna be a long list...
Past Equipment #1:
Cell Phone Camera: Samsung LG...
can't remember model, it was like LG350 or something, but it was a really old one from 2011; 3rd or 4th generation I think? one of those super tiny super crappy phones from back when people still talked in terms of "blackberries" , that's about 3" x 2". It's like the size of a credit card. (Yes, in 2016 I was still using a phone from 2011! LOL!)
Suggestions
If you are just getting started and are not sure if you like vlogging yet or not, just use your phone, whatever you got already, even a super old, super cheap, super crappy phone like this one puts out pretty good quality recordings. It's not great by any means, but it'll get you started if you are on a budget and are uncertain if vlogging is right for you.

If you want to get started in vlogging and you don't have a phone with a camera and you can't afford a dedicated camera yet... get one of these.
INSANELY CHEAP!!! These phones sell for $10 at most places like WalMart and CVS and gas stations and tourists shops, etc. It's one of those "pay as you go" type of phones, that you activate with cards you buy from 7-11, etc. They sell them in a lot of toritst locations like National Parks or beach resorts, they are intended for people who forgot their phone or camera back at the hotel and needed to grab a cheap phone/camera fast.
Well. I saw this and I was like: OMG! A $10 digital camera!
I never bothered to activate the phone, so every day I get a text message that says "remember to buy a card now and add minutes to your phone", but other then that, no complaints.
The camera on this thing is amazing. And it has all sorts of built in special effects, like recording in black&white, recording in 1960s tie dye; recording in sepia, recording in a green night vision looking tint. Recording in "chalk drawing" which looks like a cartoon and is pretty awesome - I did a whole series of vlogs of my cat, with that mode. Came out amazing.
I think if you tried to buy a digital camera of this quality, you'd probably pay $75 or more, so it's defiantly worth way more then the $10 price tag.
I'm not sure what the life of these is, so I went back and bought a 2nd one.
Wicked Cool Tip
Once I had two of these, I was able to set up a "2 way vlog" on my dashboard. One camera facing me while I drive, the other facing out the windshield. During editing, I spliced the two together "face cam on backdrop" style like gamers do. I did this for my 5 hour drive to Acadia National Park and then on the drive around park Loop Road, and the climb up Cadillac Mountain. These came out pretty awesome.
I highly recommend this set up if you want to get into doing car vlogs of scenic drives or foliage trips, and such.
I attacked 2 selfie sticks ($1 each from a dollar store)to my dash board (screwed right into the dash) in order to have a permanent hands free double stand for these 2 cameras.
This whole set up: 2 cameras and the home made double cam-dash stand cut me under $30 to build.

Digital Camera: Canon PowerShot A3300 IS

Goes for around $200 most places. Can be found used much cheaper on eBay. I paid $80 for mine at Target on BlackFriday.
BEST camera I have ever owned. This is a little point and shoot, that also records. Its small, so it's great for vlogging while walking, because doesn't get heavy on your hand/wrist.
For working with a tripod, this camera is great. You can set it up, start it recording, than walk away, sit in front of it to vlog.
Downside is the camera screen is on the back, no flip screen, so you can not see if you are holding the camera up to your face, over the top of your head, or down at your neck. You also can't see if the record button is on or off and it's easy to accidentally hit the button, turn it off, and still be vlogging without realizing you are no longer recording.
I would still be using this one, except, vlogging on the beach one day, I got attacked from behind by a great big wave. Pulled my under, camera and all. The camera surprisingly still works, however, it's moving parts are now filled with beach sand and the shutter gets clogged, causing the camera to "auto turn off due to shutter error".
I was about to buy another of this exact same camera when... my boyfriend buys me THIS for my birthday:

If you don't know what this is... this camera is designed by YouTube vloggers and made SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUTUBE VLOGGERS!!!! Yay!
Suggestions
Definitely get the biggest memory card you can for this. You don't want to be recording for 12 hours and have a card that won't hold 12 hours of footage!
This thing is a battery hog. The battery only lasts about 2 hours tops. I highly recommend you buy 2 EXTRA battery chargers and a minimum if 5 SPARE battery packs (so you have 6 batteries total, giving you 12 hours of battery charge).
It's the top of the line "entry level budget priced camera". Typically goes for around $350 to $500, depending on the seller and if it comes with "extras" or not.
The price of this has just recently come down, due to the new release of this same camera on an "updated model" (mine is the 57Xzoom edition; they have just released a 70Xzoom). Now that the new 70x edition is out, the 57x edition can usually be found discounted to around $200 to $250 is you shop around a bit. My boyfriend paid $250 for it on eBay - new, never opened, so he basically paid half-price for it.
Each extra battery costs around $30; if you are persistent, you can find deals of "buy a charger and a battery and get a 2nd battery free". I ended up getting 2 chargers and 4 extra batteries for only $60, by spending time to look for deals like this instead of paying full price.
This is a vlogging camer-corder. It does not take photographs, it's strictly a video cam. It's made to fit in the palm of your hand, has hand straps on it to attach it to your wrist for easy carrying while vlogging as you walk/hike/jog
It has a flip screen that flips to any angle, up, down, front, back, side-ways, or tucks into the side if you want to record without the screen open.
BEST FEATURE: Continuous non-stop vlogging. This camera is currently the only camera made that records continuously, for 12 hours non-stop (I tested it to see if it really did, and yes, it really does - yes, I did make a 12 hour long vlog just to test this feature :P LOL!) Other cameras shut off automaticly at 15, 30, or 45 minutes depending on the camera.
Additional Info:
I don't use a mic; just use whatever came with the camera/phone.
On the first 3 I listed (2 phones + camera) I'd suggest looking into a mic, as audio quality was only "okay". I didn't realize how much better the audio quality could be until I got the Canon Vixia HF r700. You don't need a mic for that, because it has a built in mic that was designed for use in outdoor vlogging situations, so it's pretty good at focusing on your vice and filtering out wind, car sounds, etc.
So... I've finally reached the end. wow. It was a long list. Oh well. Hopefully this info will help someone out.

This program is designed for vloggers, youtube gamers and home video film makers in mind. It's basically the same thing as Sony Vega without all the extra features you'll never use. It's made by a tiny little company in Australia. This program and a couple of similar ones is the only thing they do. It's kind of an indie-self-pubbed software.
It allows you to splice together up to 12 videos and up to 12 sound tracks. (so, you can have 11 face cams on 1 background if you wanted to, though no idea why you'd want too... but that feature is great if you plan to do multi-play gaming videos and need to add face cams of you and 3 friends in each corner). This feature lets you add background music to your videos - let's you make your voice louder and music softer, etc. Has tons of filters (warping sound; changing to black & white film; techno wave manipulations, fade effects, etc) like over 100 of them. Has the ability to add captions, text, emoji's, stickers, ect on top of the footage. That sort of stuff. It allows you to save the file in about 20 different formats too (.mp4, .wmv, .mov, .gif, etc)
Customer service is amazing. A couple of times I had issues with the program. And I contacted the company. Within 4 hours the dev himself contacted me back, said he'd replicated my error, figure out what was wrong and gave me instructions on how to fix it. He is constantly upgrading the program as well, so you get improvement updates and any add on features, sent to you free for life, which turns out to be about 1 or 2 times a month. The dev is right on top of it all the time. I got the impression this program is like his "life's work/baby".
The program can be downloaded for a free 30 day try before you buy period. Does not require any credit card or info sent to them. So after 30 days you don't have to cancel a subscription or anything. The program simply stops working and you can either delete it, or activate it by buying an activation code. The activation code I bought was the $50 one, which was "Professional Use". They also had a "Home edition" (I think it was $30? and I think maybe only had 3 tracks instead of 12 and fewer filters?) and a "Business Edition" (I think was $150, with unlimited sharing on all computers in your company)
I tried several different video editing programs and this one was by far my favorite one.
In addition to Vlogging, I also to gaming let's plays, and booktube let's reads; I use the exact same set up for those.
For anyone interested in doing a duel purpose YouTube channel like I do, with both vlogging and gaming videos, here's the gaming set up I use, with the same camera set up listed above:
My computer/Gaming Equipment
RAM = 16GB
Processor = i7-7700K 4.20GHZ
Video Card = Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5
Capture Card = AverMedia Live Gamer HD
Hard drives = 2 internal @ 3TB total and 5 external @ 16TB total (so 19TB total disc space)
The computer (Christmas present from my boyfriend) was custom built specifically to play Witcher 3 Wild Hunt, which I'm currently 117 hours into and less then a quarter way through.
Price for a set up like that is $2,000 to $7,000 depending on who you have build it vs building it yourself, and what type of chassis, cooling system, etc, you have put in the rig. Mine is water cooled, with 4 fans, and standard chassis so is in the low-mid range. Cost was $2,900.
I totally agree. I was just talking about this on a similar reddit thread last week. People were talking about what they should and shouldn't start out with, and, well I started out with an old broken cell phone made in 2011. It was a cheap phone my boyfriend threw away after getting his new phone. I used it for a full year to make my vlogs and would still be using it if my boyfriend hadn't given me a camera for my birthday a few months ago.
Once I had the camera, I did notice a difference in the quality of the audio and picture, but for the whole time I was using the old broken cell phone, I never had any issues, never thought t was poor quality.
I started out vlogging while walking my dog every morning, but then I wanted to get into car vlogging and needed a way to set up the camera on my dash. I got a selfie stick from the dollar store, used 2 screws and a drill to screw it to my dashboard, and BOOM, instant dash cam made out of a cell phone I got in the trash for free and a $1 selfie stick.
Like I said, used that set up for a full year without a single complaint from my viewers and I had no complaints myself with it either.
Every time I get a comment asking what I use and what they should start out with, I always say the same thing: use what you already got - if you have a cell phone, use that, if you don't have a cell phone or camera already, just buy one of those cheap $10 pay as you go phones they sell at WalMart or CVS or 7-11, don't bother activating the phone, just get it for the camera. I bought one of those so I could record 2 ways - one camera facing me and the other facing where I'm driving.
It cost my under $5 to get started vlogging and only $10 to upgrade. And really, you don't need one of the big high powered expensive cameras or a fancy high end cell phone. Just use what you got or get something super cheap and have at it.
Vlogging should be fun, it should be, just having fun talking bout your life as you do your daily stuff. It's not filming a big production movie, so there's no need to worry and fuss over what you record with, because really, no one watching is gonna know or even care what camera you record with. In fact the only people who ask, are the ones looking to become vloggers themselves and just don't know where to start, so they ask to learn.

The Latest Attack By Old Orchard Beach's Renegade KKK Members Who Use Their Cars As Battering Ram Weapons, To Slam Into Me While Driving Home, Has Done Horrific Amounts of Damage To My Daily Driver:
The car which attacked me on the Ross Road, just outside of the entrance to the Blueberry Plains, was a fairly new model of a Honda minivan, color maroon/burgundy metallic.
As with the previous attackers, this car had no license plates on it.
The driver appeared to be a man, but could have been a woman. Was wearing a straw hat, pulled down over their face to conceal their features.
This is not the first time they have done this. This particular attack however has done several thousand in damages to my car.
It is unknown if this driver was armed, however it should be noted that previous attackers, were armed with illegal automatic rifles, and it is assumed this attacker likely was as well.
The passenger's side of the front bumper of their car has a large pink paint smear on it, from the pink paint on my car.
Do be aware that this group of domestic terrorists, (who call themselves "The Loyalist White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan") are wanted by the FBI and are considered to be heavily armed and extremely dangerous. Their attacks on the non-white, non-Christian, and LGBTQ residents of Old Orchard Beach are becoming more frequent and much bolder. Do NOT approach them if you see them, just call the local police and the FBI immediately and run as far away from range of their gun fire as possible.
Do keep in mind that this group of terrorists are the ones who blew up my house with a bomb October 18, 2006, beheaded my cousin July 2013, drove a backhoe over my next house August 8, 2013, beat me up on November 14, 2013 leaving me paralyzed 5 months and crippled for the rest of my life, filled my motorhome with thousands of gallons of feces April 10, 2015, kidnapped my cats and have been one at a time returning the heads of my cats.
Since I got beaten up by this weird so-called author, November 14, 2013, still no clue who she is, but she left me paralyzed for 5 months, during which time she hacked my KBoards account, my NaNoWriMo account, my website, my FaceBook, my Twitter, and other places, pretending to be me and written horrible stuff via my accounts. Then she created 52 fake Amazon accounts and left 52 fake and completely identical 1 star reviews on every one of my books.
I was paralyzed 5 months, relearning to walk 18 months... and I was offline for a full 3 years, and had no clue this woman had taken over all my online accounts or had done any of these things, until 2015. :( .
I'm crippled for the rest of my life, on a cane with one leg useless, and only have the use of 1 hand now, and permanent damage to my spine.
I used to publish a novel a month... now because of this still unidentified Kboards member, I've got $3million in medical bills, a bomb also blew up my house so living in my car, can barely move, and am lucky if I can get 1 book typed up a year. So frustrating.
It's been 4 years and I'm still in physical therapy, and it's a good day if I can stand up, let alone walk. Had to cancel the 2015-2018 book signing tour, and had to cancel all the monthly book releases from November 2013 to who knows when... still all canceled and we are closing in on 2018 now.
The Kboards hacker crushed my spine, my hip, my pelvis, and my knee. Tore up all the nerves and muscles. Got a $40million lawsuit waiting for when the FBI finally identifies who the Kboards hacker is. They have done similar things to 140 other families in Old Orchard Beach. In the past 4 years they have kidnapped and beheaded more than 500 cats and dogs. I'm a woman who has had 7 miscarriages, and wears "elaborate clothes". Because I have no children, the residents of Old Orchard Beach, beat me up, calling me a transsexual, claiming only a man would dress like I do, claiming that the reason I have no children is because I'm not really female.
They left me paralyzed and crippled.

The Quaraun Series On Amazon:
I am wondering why has Amazon moved the Quaraun books to the category "Transgender Romance" and also "Gay Erotica"? The base story is a deeply depressed, suicidal, drug addict Elf who's lover commit suicide and he's trying not to do the same. It's an old Elf in a tavern, monologuing a lot of flashbacks and back story scenes of his youth. These stories are dark, bloody, angsty, full of drug use, murder, rape, Medieval torture, mental/physical/emotional abuse, and references to depression and suicide - no romance in it, unless you count the occasional (and usually brutally violent) rape scenes that show up in nearly every volume - sorry - no clue what Amazon is thinking or why they moved these to Romance and Erotica, but these books are NOT even close to being Romance or Erotica on any level at all. When I published these books I put them in "Dark Fantasy" and "Yaoi". If they show up in any category other then "Dark Fantasy" and "Yaoi", it's because Amazon put them there without my authorization or approval.

The 4 door white truck continues to sit at the end of my drive way (146 Portland Ave, Old Orchard Beach, Maine) near every night around sunset, reeving it's engine and squealing it's tires, with the driver yelling anti-gay threats and obscenities out the window. He continues to do the same thing at my dad's apartment building (Biddeford Maine) a few times a week, usually in mid to late afternoon time. He continues to follow me to shopping to various stores in various towns throughout the states.
Phrases he yells from the truck include:
"Kill or be killed remember Saco Shaws all transsexuals are alike"
"I keep a gun under the seat of my truck, I'm gonna use it to shoot you in the head, you transvestite freak"
if cars are going by he yells to them: "that thing is Ken's son, look at how's it's dressed; it's insane, it has autism, we can't allow that thing and it's gay cars in our family friend town of Old Orchard Beach"
He often babbles deranged ramblings about something he calls "the gay-pocalypse", raving lunacy about how "all the gays are gathering" on his doorstep. He raves some crazy nonsense about how Armageddon is coming and the war to end all wars will be "the gays against the Christians" and Christians have to be ready to "kill the gays"
My car is the Autism Awareness Car and had 2.5million marbles glued to it (I have Autism - savant - Kanner's syndrome) he claims tat my car "is gay" because of what it looks like. My car has been vandalized several dozen times, including to have the tires slashed 7 times in 6 months.
After dark often around 10PM, he stands at the end of the logging road across the street from me and shoots at my motohome (in February 2014 he shot holes in my neighbour's barn while doing this). This has gone on since August 2013 now, in addition to all the vandalism, hate crimes, pet beheadings, etc that has happened, including the bomb that blew up our house in 2006.
As you know, that whole time I had not been able to get a plate number on the truck. He as just here again, and I just realized why I could not get a plate number... there are no plates on the truck, either on the front or on the back. However, as he was driving away today... I noticed, there is a plate, stuck up in the back window of the truck, where it can barely be seen, deliberately obscured from view behind a silver tool box.
