Using Solo Build It's (SBI) Brainstorm It Master Keyword List (MKL) For Content Site Niche Topic Keyword Research

I am answering random questions today.

Lack of trust in Brainstorm It / MKL

 #1378408  by David from inside-peru.com
 04 Aug 2017 18:38

340 kw with Profitability over 20,000

19 had a Real Supply of 1.

Sounds great.

But that is not the stark reality.

For example, "entry ..." showed Demand 1071, Supply 1

But when I Googled that KW, the top ten spots were huge sites; all ranking less than 25,000 on Alexa.

The same for the other so-called low supply keywords that I checked.

What's going on?

 04 Aug 2017 18:48

Hi David,

I have found the same problem for a long time now. When someone tries to explain it, the answers don't satisfy me in any way shape or form. When I first started, I picked really good numbers but they change constantly. Not just a bit, a whole bunch. A keyword that looked wonderful at a precise moment is then garbage the next time you check.

I'd like a real well thought out explanation beside: "Oh they are always going up and down". That's fine if it's small corrections but not when they go one way or the other in the thousands? Is it GIGO? I don't know.

Cheers,

Doug C.

Using Solo Build It's (SBI) Brainstorm It Master Keyword List (MKL) For Content Site Niche Topic Keyword Research

Not sure if this helps, but...

Demand 99 Supply 1 on a keyword, means...

99 people searched for that keyword in the past 28 days
1 site had that keyword as their EXACT url

writing tips fantasy demand = 99 supply = 1

99 people searched for "writing fantasy tips" in the past 28 days
1 site had that keyword as their EXACT url:

  • mysite.com/writing-fantasy-tips

I'll explain using keywords from my own mkl, because I can see those numbers...

Keyword

writing tips fantasy

how to write novel

to write a novel

how to write fantasy

how to write fiction

Keyword

Demand

99

175

2,336

84

505

Demand

Supply

1

4

668

18

141

Supply

This means, that in the past 28 days 175 people typed "how to write novel" into Google search box, while 2,336 people typed "how to write a novel" in the search box instead.

supply means...

4 sites have that EXACT keyword EXACTLY WITH NO VARIATION in the url...

  • mysite.com/how-to-write-novel

note, it will not include:

  • mysite.com/howtowritenovel
  • mysite.com/HowToWriteNovel
  • mysite.com/How-To-Write-Novel
  • mysite.com/how-to-write-a-novel
  • mysite.com/how-to-write-novels
  • etc.

while 668 sites had the other EXACT keyword EXACTLY WITH NO VARIATION in the url...

  • mysite.com/how-to-write-a-novel

On the other hand...

This means, that in the past 28 days 84 people typed "how to write fantasy" into Google search box, while 505 people typed "how to write fiction" in the search box instead.

supply means...

18 sites have that EXACT keyword EXACTLY WITH NO VARIATION in the url...

  • mysite.com/how-to-write-fantasy

while 141 sites had the other EXACT keyword EXACTLY WITH NO VARIATION in the url...

  • mysite.com/how-to-write-fiction

Brainstorm searches only for EXACT url

so, these sites...

  • mysite.com/how-to-write-fiction-novels
  • mysite.com/how-to-write-fantasy-novels
  • mysite.com/how-to-write-a-fantasy-novel
  • mysite.com/how-to-write-novels
  • mysite.com/howtowritenovel
  • mysite.com/howtowritenovels
  • mysite.com/HowToWriteNovel
  • mysite.com/HowToWriteNovels
  • mysite.com/How-To-Write-Novel
  • mysite.com/How-To-Write-Novels
  • mysite.com/how-to-write-a-novel
  • mysite.com/how-2-write-novels
  • mysite.com/how-I-write-fiction-novels
  • mysite.com/how-Terry-Pratchett-writes-fantasy-novels
  • mysite.com/how-to-write-a-great-novel
  • mysite.com/how-to-write-better-novels

etc

will not show up in Brainstormer's results of Demand vs Supply... BUT those sites WILL show up in Google search results

Meaning while Brainstormer tells you only 4 sites have a supply for "how to write novel", Google is going to bring back tens of thousands of sites for that search term, not just the ones with that EXACT keyword in the url, the way Brainstormer is doing.

Does that explain better why your results from Brainstormer seem to be off, from what Google and Alexia are telling you?

Keep in mind too, that next month, you may get totally different numbers, because next month there may be 5,000+ people searching for the keyword "how to write novel" and then the month after that, maybe only 3 people search for it.

The Brainstorm numbers of demand change EVERY DAY, so if I search today it shows me the numbers from 28 days ago, to today, but when I search tomorrow it shows me the numbers 28 days from tomorrow, so it'll no longer include search results from the 1st day shown yesterday. (Does that make sense?)

It is because of this variation that is constantly changing every day, that is why, before I make a new page, I take the search term Brainstormer gave me and I search for that EXACT term on:

  1. Google
  2. Bing
  3. DuckDuckGo
  4. DogPile
  5. YahooAnswers
  6. Reddit
  7. YouTube
  8. Amazon

and any other search engine I'm thinking of at the time... to see just exactly what results I get from each one.

I then open the top 10 results from each search engine to see which sites are my top competitors for that EXACT search term (Reddit & YahooAnswers shows me what forum posts on the topic are currently be talked about, so I can see directly what people are talking about, not just what site articles are saying, YouTube allows me to find on topic videos to embed into my article if I write it, while Amazon shows me any products on the topic I can feature should I decide to write an article on the topic)

(Keeping in mind "how to write novel" brings back different results then "how to write a novel", so I search for both variations.)

In the end, I use Brainstormer, not as a "know all source" but rather as a way to find out what search terms are trending in my topic.

For example, when Vampires were "in", lots of people were searching for "how to write vampires" and "how to write a vampire romance". But now that vampires are out of fashion, you hardly ever see those search terms any more.

I like Brainstormer because it allows me to see what the current trends are in my niche, by allowing me to see the most searched for keywords of my niche in the last 28 days.

For me, that's how I use Brainstormer. I generally don't pay much attention to the supply or profitability sections. I'm only really interested in seeing which ones rank highest in the demand second, then researching other sites to see if my site is appropriate to cover that trend as well, or should I focus on a different trending term instead?

I hope I explained that so it made sense.

Adding more info to explain further...

Let's now do a search to see what we get.

We are going to use:

Amazon Gives Us This:

Can you see the difference?

Each search engine gives us different results.

No one search engine gives us every thing we need to know on the first page, which is why we as site builders need to compare ALL of the results from each place, not just one place or the other.

Now, say I decide to make a page on my site, using the keyword "how to write a novel" which would look liked this:

  • eelkat.com/how-to-write-a-novel

Before I write the article, I would want to do a few things:

Determine who my direct competitors are. I do this by doing the following:

  • Remove big corp sites from the list (Pinterest, eHow, GoodReads, Wikipedia, etc)
  • Remove any sale sites from the list (Amazon, eBay, Etsy, WalMart, BestBuy, etc)
  • Remove all social network results (FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc)
  • Remove and big multi-author mash-up/news sites from the list (Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Huffington Post, BuzzFeed, etc)
  • Take out and set aside and forum question/answers (Reddit, Quora, YahooAnswers, forums in general)... don't remove them because I may use them later.
  • Any site that opens a popup before the site opens is removed regardless of what it is.
  • Remove any site that opens to a lead page (ClickBank, and the buy, buy, buy, buy, buy, for the 1 time low price of just $499!)
  • Any site that opens to music, gets deleted.
  • What's left should now be blogs, content sites, and author home pages.
  • Separate the blogs to one list and the content sites to another list.
  • Focus on the content sites for now.
  • Are any of them hosted by SBI?
  • Divide them into 2 lists:
  1. SBI hosted
  2. hosted elsewhere

The ones hosted by SBI, are the ones I will likely link back to. They are also the ones I'll likely recommend. Often they are also written by people I know and whom are friends of mine. The SBI hosted sites are the "friendly competitors" aka the ones I want to do business with. These are the sites you want to pick out and focus on as the people to rub elbows with.

The ones hosted elsewhere, are the "direct competitors" the ones I need to analyze what they are doing, how they are doing it, and then, build my "how to write a novel" page, specifically with the goal of outranking them. These are the people you want to soar above.

After you have done this, you'll start to notice, a few sites have a LOT of pages in the search results. There will be 4 or 5 sites who have the 2 or 3 pages each in the top 50 search results of each search engine.

Why?

Find out.

Study them.

For the keyword "how to write a novel" I have narrowed down 6 sites that do this.

Go back and look at the links in the search results I've listed above... you'll see these 6 websites are dominating that search term:

Top Competitors For The Keyword "how to write a novel"

  1. http://www.creative-writing-now.com (an SBI site)
  2. http://www.novel-writing-help.com (an SBI site)
  3. http://terribleminds.com (WP site)
  4. http://www.advancedfictionwriting.com (an SBI site)
  5. http://www.how-to-write-a-book-now.com (an SBI site)
  6. http://writetodone.com (WP site)

Note - SBI sites rank the top .05% of all content sites on the internet, so, seeing several show up like this as your top competitors REGARDLESS of your topic is very common.

As WordPress is the largest web hosting service out there, you'll likely see a lot of sites hosted by them as well.

Those 6 sites, therefore become the top competitors for the search term "how to write a novel"

Each of those sites has a page with the url:

  • SITENAME.com/how-to-write-a-novel

(I just checked)

They also each have:

  • SITENAME.com/how-to-write-a-novel-2
  • SITENAME.com/how-to-write-a-novel-3
  • SITENAME.com/how-to-write-a-novel-4
  • SITENAME.com/more-how-to-write-a-novel
  • SITENAME.com/how-to-write-novels
  • SITENAME.com/how-to-write-a-better-novel
  • SITENAME.com/how-to-write-a-novel-today

and many, many more variations of that same keyword.

Which explains why they are each ranking so very high in search results, for so many pages of their sites, in the search for "how to write a novel"

If I was going to write a page on "how to write a novel" I would then focus my research on these 6 sites, to find out what they did, how they did it, what they said, why they said it, etc.

Do I agree with them?

Do I disagree with them?

Did they miss pointing out any important information?

More importantly, do I have anything to add to this topic, that they have not already covered?

These are all things I would then use to decide if I would add a page on "how to write a novel" to my site or not.

The Quaraun Series On Amazon:

I am wondering why has Amazon moved the Quaraun books to the category "Transgender Romance" and also "Gay Erotica"? The base story is a deeply depressed, suicidal, drug addict Elf who's lover commit suicide and he's trying not to do the same. It's an old Elf in a tavern, monologuing a lot of flashbacks and back story scenes of his youth. These stories are dark, bloody, angsty, full of drug use, murder, rape, Medieval torture, mental/physical/emotional abuse, and references to depression and suicide - no romance in it, unless you count the occasional (and usually brutally violent) rape scenes that show up in nearly every volume - sorry - no clue what Amazon is thinking or why they moved these to Romance and Erotica, but these books are NOT even close to being Romance or Erotica on any level at all. When I published these books I put them in "Dark Fantasy" and "Yaoi". If they show up in any category other then "Dark Fantasy" and "Yaoi", it's because Amazon put them there without my authorization or approval.

Reacting To Old Orchard Beach's
White Power Gay Hating Over Reaction Ban
Of The Quaraun Series:

The 4 door white truck continues to sit at the end of my drive way (146 Portland Ave, Old Orchard Beach, Maine) near every night around sunset, reeving it's engine and squealing it's tires, with the driver yelling anti-gay threats and obscenities out the window. He continues to do the same thing at my dad's apartment building (Biddeford Maine) a few times a week, usually in mid to late afternoon time. He continues to follow me to shopping to various stores in various towns throughout the states.

Phrases he yells from the truck include:

"Kill or be killed remember Saco Shaws all transsexuals are alike"

"I keep a gun under the seat of my truck, I'm gonna use it to shoot you in the head, you transvestite freak"

if cars are going by he yells to them: "that thing is Ken's son, look at how's it's dressed; it's insane, it has autism, we can't allow that thing and it's gay cars in our family friend town of Old Orchard Beach"

He often babbles deranged ramblings about something he calls "the gay-pocalypse", raving lunacy about how "all the gays are gathering" on his doorstep. He raves some crazy nonsense about how Armageddon is coming and the war to end all wars will be "the gays against the Christians" and Christians have to be ready to "kill the gays"

My car is the Autism Awareness Car and had 2.5million marbles glued to it (I have Autism - savant - Kanner's syndrome) he claims tat my car "is gay" because of what it looks like. My car has been vandalized several dozen times, including to have the tires slashed 7 times in 6 months.

After dark often around 10PM, he stands at the end of the logging road across the street from me and shoots at my motohome (in February 2014 he shot holes in my neighbour's barn while doing this). I have video footage of 3 of his shootings at me here:  https://youtu.be/NUebzJ9sz9U and here: https://youtu.be/C4dZbgG-Smw

This has gone on since August 2013 now, in addition to all the vandalism, hate crimes, pet beheadings, etc that has happened, including the bomb that blew up our house in 2006.

As you know, that whole time I had not been able to get a plate number on the truck. He as just here again, and I just realized why I could not get a plate number... there are no plates on the truck, either on the front or on the back. However, as he was driving away today... I noticed, there is a plate, stuck up in the back window of the truck, where it can barely be seen, deliberately obscured from view behind a silver tool box.
