I want to write Monster Porn. What are your sales figures like?

This question came to me from an email...

I want to write Monster Porn. What are your sales figures like?

#1: The first thing you need to know is that the rumour that you can make it big and become an overnight millionaire in Monster Porn, is a myth. If you dream of writing 1 oe 2 Monster Porn books and sitting back to watch the cash roll in, you are delusional and misinformed. The writers in Monster Porn who live off their income from Monster Porn are writing at minimum 4 novels a year, and most are publishing a new novel each month, just to make enough money to stay afloat.

The authors earning $30k or more a year (which is less than minimum wage) are the ones publishing 1 novel a month and 2 or 3 short stories a week, have a backlog of 300+ books and continually publish, tirelessly non-stop n a grueling schedule that allows for no free time and no vacations.

There are exactly 3 of them (Virginia Wade and the 2 Dino Porn sisters), and all of them stopped writing Monster Porn years ago. In each case, citing that the workload of maintaining an income was too much stress. In each case saying that every time they went a month between publishing a new novel, they saw a month of ZERO income. Each citing the only way they were able to maintain their writing income (due to sales being so low) was to be constantly writing with no break. Each citing that they did not really even like Monster Porn and had only started writing it as a joke or on a dare.

#2: Know that there are approximately 7,000 readers of Monster Porn world wide and that:

  • it is VERY rare for a single title of Monster Porn to sell more than 7,000 copies total in its lifetime
  • MOST Monster Porn titles will sell fewer than 1,000 copies total in its lifetime
  • the MAJORITY of Monster Porn authors never see even 100 copies sold in TOTAL across ALL of their titles combined

#3: I an considered one of the top authors in Monster Porn, and only a tiny few of my titles have ever reached selling 7,000 copies, a few of my titles have reached 3,000 copies sold, and MOST of my titles have YET to sell 1,000 copies per title.

#4: My top 3 selling books in order are:

  1. The Night of the Screaming Unicorn (Free sample chapters can be read online here)
  2. BoomFuzzy (Free sample chapters can be read online here)
  3. Into the Swamp of Death (Free sample chapters can be read online here)

Each of these volumes, were reprints of older, previously published books, that had a large already there, fan following. Each of these books had fans who had previously read them years ago, waiting to read them again. Thus, when their re-release was announced, each of these 3 books, sold:

  • 1,000+ copies the first day of publication, with-in the first hour of going live.
  • Each of these books got a few hundred more copies the following day.
  • Each got a few hundred more copies the following week.
  • After the first month, MOST of the fans had bought copies, and sales dried up near completely within 60 days of the release date.
  • For the first 6 months of publication, each title continued to see 10 or 12 sales a week.
  • After that each title saw fewer than 10 sales per month.
  • Now 3 years after the publication date, each title receives 1 to 4 sales per month.
  • Though 1 of these books ranks as the #1 bestseller for one of it's categories, each of these 3 titles has a sales rank of the low millions. It was around 2 million when I last checked and it's probably around 3 million by now.

So how does this translate into income?

The ebooks editions sell for $7.99, the paperback editions sell for $14.99. After Amazon takes their cut, I make $3 per copy sold (for both print and ebook editions).

When I originally set those prices, it was done that way to earn me $5 per copy sold, however, in 2015 Amazon changed how they paid authors and now, though we still get the same royalties, Amazon now takes an additional cut on top of their regular cut. This additional cut is known as "a delivery fee" and is based off the word count of the book, and can vary from only .20c for a short story to $4 or more for a novel. The longer your novel is, the bigger a cut Amazon takes out of your royalties.

I few overseas authors have complained that they could not sell their books as print editions due to the fact that the delivery fee was over $20 forcing them to have a cover price in excess of $45 for a paperback novel and then earning only $2 from it. I'm uncertain the details over overseas version of Amazon's delivery fee charges, but I know it has resulted in a dramatic increase in the price of Kindle Edition paperback print books the past year.

3,000x$3 means that my top selling titles will bring in a grand total of no more then $9,000 in their lifetme

1,000x$3 means that MOST of my titles will never reach bringing in a lifetime total of $3,000

10x$3 means that MOST of my titles will earn me around $30 income per month.

Most months the Quaraun series brings in less then $200 a month income.

Meaning that my yearly income from sales of the Quaraun series comes to around $2,000 per year (my yearly income from Monster Porn sales is less income then a WalMart cashier earns each MONTH. If you are looking to earn money fast, get a job a WalMart, it less work, for more pay, for fewer hours worked.)

My income from Monster Porn is around $200 a month and I'm one of the top selling, highest paid authors in Monster Porn.

There you are, full transparency of the reality of what kind of income you can expect to see if you decide to pursue Monster Porn.

Keep in mind that MOST Monster Porn authors list their books at .99c meaning they earn only .35c per sale, meaning at 10 copies per month sold, they struggle to see a $5 a month income from Monster Porn.

This is not the first time I have given sales reports out at the request of writers looking to write Monster Porn. In nearly every case, upon discovering that even though I rank among the highest sales in Monster Porn, both my sales and income are incredibly low in comparison to more mainstream genres, like Romance.

In most cases, they respond back to ask me, WHY... Why if sales are so low, and income almost not existent, and bad reviews and critics so high, and the violence and vandalism by haters so surverer... WHY do you write Monster Porn?

Why? Because it is what I like writing.

You must also remember that I've been writing this genre since 1978 and have published 130+ novels, 2,000+ short stories, and a few dozen stage plays, within this genre in those 40 years... and that before 2007, I gave away all those copies for free.

I never made a penny for the bulk of my Monster Porn career.

I don't write for money. I never have. I write, because writing is what I like to do.

MOST authors of Monster Porn whom have contacted me asking me how I got my sales, have reported that they have struggled to sell even a dozen or more copies the first year, and after 2 or 3 years have yet to have a title sell 100 copies.

Yeah... those ARE the type of sales figures you can expect.

The only reason I get a higher rate of sales is because my blog has 300,000 email subscribers, and I've got 3million followers across my combined social media, due largely to my website being online since 1996, and my being a member of FanFiction.net for 20+ years.

I have enough of a following, a following that it took me 20 years to build, that I get a higher than normal rate of sales from my books.

If you want to have the sale figures I do, in Monster Porn... post 90% of your stuff for free online, on Fan-Fiction.net, published about 60% to 70% of your novels free to read online, but don't publish any of the sex scene online, don''t publish the last 5 chapters online. If people like what's online and want to read the sex or find out how the story ends... they HAVE to buy the book.

That's HOW I get so many sales in Monster Porn. Look around this web site. You can read most all of the Quaraun novels for free online here on my website. But you won't find any of the sex scenes for free. You pay to read those. And you won't find the ending of any of the novel on here either, again, you have to pay for those. And people do. People get hooked on reading the chapters, so the buy the books.

If you want to have a few thousands sales instead of struggling to even reach 100 sales, that's what you have to do.

Monster Porn is not a popular or big selling genre. It's a hard genre to sell. You write it because you love it, not because you want it to become your income.

Sadly, in spite of the media hype over Monster Porn, MOST authors of Monster Porn report struggling to reach 100 books sold, and report making less then $50 a year off sales of their Monster Porn titles.

In the end, if you want to write Monster Porn, write Monster Porn. But if you want a steady, reliable income, get a job at WalMart, it pays way more money then Monster Porn does.
